EPL: Man City Beats Cardiff to Go Top

first_imgManchester City moved back above Liverpool at the top of the Premier League after easing to victory against struggling Cardiff. An eighth successive league win for the defending champions was seldom in doubt and means they lead Jurgen Klopp’s team by a point with six games remaining.Pep Guardiola’s side, who are chasing an unprecedented quadruple, know they will finish top if they win their remaining matches but it is unlikely many of them will be as straightforward as this one. Kevin de Bruyne took just five minutes to open the scoring with his first league goal since 22 December, running on to Aymeric Laporte’s pass and squeezing his shot into the roof of the net from a tight angle.More Manchester City possession and chances followed, before Leroy Sane made it 2-0 just before half-time, burying his shot into the bottom corner after a neat chested knock-down from Gabriel Jesus.Cardiff, who remain five points adrift of safety, barely threatened at the other end and did not register an effort at goal or a touch in the home area until Junior Hoilett had a hopeful shot blocked at the very end of the first half. They did not manage a serious foray forward until Oumar Niasse broke away to force Ederson into a fine save after 85 minutes, while Manchester City continued to pepper Neil Etheridge’s goal with shots.Phil Foden had two efforts brilliantly stopped by Etheridge as he tried unsuccessfully to mark his first league start with a goal, while Jesus saw an elaborate flick fly wide when it appeared easy to tap the ball home, with his blushes saved by an offside flag.Despite failing to add to their tally in the second half, Manchester City’s goal difference is now nine better than Liverpool’s – although the Reds can replace them at the top if they win at Southampton on Friday.Elsewhere yesterday, Chelsea defeated Brighton 3-0 to go on same points as Srsenal who have a game at hand while Tottenham Hotspur opened their new stadium with 2-0 defeat of Crystal Palace to remain third on the log.Share this:FacebookRedditTwitterPrintPinterestEmailWhatsAppSkypeLinkedInTumblrPocketTelegramlast_img read more

(Photo by Harry How/Getty Images)ExpandSAN DIEGO — LeBron James was bound to get a roar of approval from the roughly 14,000 fans no matter what he did.It was the soundtrack that rose as he jogged briskly into the arena for the first time; as he gave a subtle version of the chalk clap that he once made so iconic. The crowd rose and then sighed in disappointment as James’ first shot – a turnaround fadeaway jumper at the baseline – caromed off the rim. Then they rose and applauded when he did make a 3-pointer less than three minutes into the game.It was all familiar from a player that has occupied a worldwide stage for the last 15 years, but the night was different than any other night so far for James, the fans and a national audience: He’s a Laker now.“It definitely feels different,” he said, unintentionally speaking on the world’s behalf. “It’ll take a little time to get used to.” AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREUCLA alum Kenny Clark signs four-year contract extension with PackersThe 33-year-old star played just 15 minutes, but his first half of nine points, four assists and three rebounds against the Denver Nuggets in the preseason opener at Valley View Casino Center was the start of a new era for pro basketball’s biggest star and its most high-profile franchise. That it was a 124-107 loss for the Lakers was of little consequence – in the preseason, the results don’t count, optimism still reigns over all other impulses, and the fans who sold out the arena got what they wanted to see.The Lakers featured many of the characteristics of the team that was promised: a fast-paced, attacking group with ballhandlers who can move up the court in a flash. James sped up his pace to the Lakers’ high-speed tempo. Fellow newcomer Rajon Rondo enjoyed a promising opening performance with 11 assists in just 23 minutes – and the recipients of his passes, especially Brandon Ingram (16 points) and JaVale McGee (17 points) looked all the better for his efforts. The most thrilling Laker baskets of the evening used speed as a key element, starting with Rondo’s alley-oop to McGee in the first seconds after the opening tip-off.“I like to stay skinny, I like to sprint,” McGee said. “I like to run up and down the floor. That’s what I want in my game now, it’s just being able to get up and down the floor and catch lobs and stay light.”But the team also fleshed out some of the concerns that observers have had about the roster since it was constructed: Defensively, the Lakers had a familiar inconsistency, with iffy closeouts and miscommunications on switches common in the preseason. By the early fourth quarter, the Nuggets had all but put the game out of reach with an 18-point lead. The Lakers are determined to keep trying it out through preseason to see how much potential a smaller rotation can have.“There was tough moments out there,” he said. “But, like I said before, we’re gonna stick with it. We’re not gonna overreact.”The Lakers struggled with fouls, totaling 31 for the game – in turn, the Nuggets were a crisp 31 for 35 from the free-throw line. Walton attributed the foul trouble to changes in fouling points of emphasis that “we have to get adjusted to.”Related Articles Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error Jamal Murray stood out for Denver with 18 points, shooting 8 for 12 from the floor. Juancho Hernangomez added 19 points playing much of the late minutes against the Lakers bench.Denver, of course, is a team that preserved much of its foundation from last season – re-signing their own players were the Nuggets’ biggest free agency moves. A team like the Lakers, where nearly half the roster consists of new pieces, naturally would take more time to coalesce. This is what the Lakers told themselves as they took a bus out of San Diego: It’s still early, and the components are new. Every team needs to start somewhere. For the Lakers, at least that start includes James.“It was great to get back on the floor and start a new journey for myself,” he said. “Hearing the Lakers fans that we have here in San Diego, it was a great feeling to go out there and hear the roar from the fans here so I very much appreciate that.”last_img read more
