Jamaica hopes to develop faith-based tourism

first_imgJamaica says its thrust to become a preferred faith-based tourism destination is expected to be boosted with the staging of the Supernatural Encounter Jamaica crusade in Montego Bay next month.Event coordinator and founder of Trumpet Call Ministries International, Reverend Mary Wildish, said the April 19-21 event, which is to be led by founder of King Jesus International Ministry, Apostle Guillermo Maldonado, will be streamed live and is expected to reach a broad religious-minded global audience. To be streamed to 150 nations“He has a media reach that is unbelievable… . This crusade will be streamed to 150 different nations. People are going to have their eyes on Montego Bay, Jamaica, and what they are going to see is the masses gathered to worship God. They are going to see the pastors united (and) they are going to see the beauty of our island,” Reverend Wildish told a Jamaica Information Service Think Tank. She said Jamaica also stands to gain significant mileage from Apostle Maldonado’s policy of highlighting outstanding features of the countries where the crusades are staged. To place Jamaica on international map for three-days“One of the things Apostle (Maldonado) does is a 60-minute clip talking about the nation… talking about the beauty inside (that country). So, it’s going to put Jamaica on the map during these three days, and I think that level of positive outreach to the globe is something that Jamaica wants and needs,” Rev. Wildish added.Faith-based tourism, according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), is one of the fastest growing segments of the travel industry. An estimated 300 million tourists visit the world’s major religious sites each year, with 600 million national and international religious voyages being undertaken annually. The UNWTO says this growth in faith-based tourism can potentially generate significant inclusive development, through the creation of jobs and sustainable livelihoods, facilitating infrastructure enhancement and investment, and stimulating local culture, crafts and food.Reverend Wildish said Jamaica has become popular globally for, among other things, reggae music, its food and its athletes. She said, however, that the island has the potential to pull more religious tourists to its shores, despite its challenges, and remains a God-fearing nation.last_img read more

UN Peacekeepers in Haiti Fathered and Abandoned Hundreds of Children

first_imgPORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – According to a report in British publication, The Times, United Nations peacekeepers stationed in Haiti since the 2010 devastating earthquake, fathered hundreds of children then abandoned their young mothers to lives of poverty.According to report, a study into the UN’s longest peacekeeping mission said girls as young as age 11 would trade sex for food or ‘a few coins’ so they could survive amid political turmoil and the aftermath of the earthquake. After facing sexual abuse and impregnation, these girls and young women were ‘left in misery’ to raise their children by themselves, The Times reported.Due to the prevalence of the problem, locals have dubbed these children “Petit Minustah” after the acronym for the mission to Haiti between 2004 and 2017, United Nations Mission for Justice Support in Haiti. The research study’s team was led by Sabine Lee, from the University of Birmingham, and between June and August 2017 they conducted more than 2,500 interviews with people living close to UN bases in Haiti.According to the newspaper, the issue of UN babies was raised, unprompted, over 250 times. The research claims that soldiers from 12 countries have been identified as fathering and abandoning the children. While admitting it was impossible to give a definitive number of peacekeeper-fathered children, Professor Lee said “most researchers and NGO officials would agree that hundreds is a credible estimate, adding that “it’s a pervasive issue, not isolated cases.”“The multitude of stories and the fact that sexual exploitation, abuse and the existence and abandonment of peacekeeper-fathered children appeared over and over again in the stories indicates that this is a very significant problem.”Controversy is nothing new to UN’s Haiti mission, since troops from Nepal were blamed for accidentally sparking the cholera outbreak which killed 10,000 people following the 2010 earthquake and 114 Sri Lankan soldiers were sent home admid child sex allegations.last_img read more

Norsk charities launch study on ‘sensitive area’ of market models

first_img Norway’s monopoly brought into question as problem gambling rates increase May 26, 2020 StumbleUpon Spillavhengighet Norge, Norway’s problem gambling association, has confirmed that it will study opposing market frameworks to Norway’s existing monopoly structure. The decision follows the conclusion of Spillavhengighet’s annual ‘Gaming Addiction Conference’, in which members unanimously voted to form a working group reviewing different market models.Operating under a monopoly framework, to date Norwegian gambling has been exclusively serviced by state-owned enterprises Norsk Tipping (betting/lotteries/gaming) and Rikstoto (racing). However, the monopoly framework has been challenged by remote gambling operators, who argue that Norway’s online marketplace can be accessed as it holds no distinct online gambling laws under the mandate of its ‘1995 Lottery Act’.Legislative grey areas have caused much friction between international operators and gambling regulator Lottstift which continues to enforce a ‘zero tolerance’ approach on remote actors who undermine Norsk Tipping and Rikstoto’s monopoly privileges.Confirming Spillavhengighet’s planned study, senior advisor Magnus Pedersen noted that members had chosen to review a ‘polarising debate for Norwegian gambling’.Supporting Spillavhengighet initiatives, Pedersen stated that stakeholders could not afford a ‘black and white debate’ on market frameworks, as Spillavhengighet has a duty to protect vulnerable consumers.Furthermore, Pedersen and Spillavhengighet underlined that Norwegian circumstances had changed following the re-regulation of Sweden’s online gambling marketplace in 2019, radically changing marketplace dynamics.Pernille Huseby, Secretary-General of addiction treatment charity Actis, branded Spillavhengighet study as unnecessary and conflicting.Huseby stated that market dynamics had been comprehensively reviewed by Storting (Parliament) back in 2018, backing Norway’s existing model.“The unequivocal answer was that, with regard to accountability and a safe framework, the ‘one-law model’ was what the majority in the Storting thought would be safest…we still stand by that,” Huseby told Norwegian media.Renewing the concessions of Norsk Tipping and Rikstoto, both Storting and Lottstift have underlined that the Norwegian government holds no plans to review its gambling frameworks or open any markets for foreign competition.
