Lawmakers react to Petraeus report

first_img– Rep. Brad Sherman, D-Sherman Oaks “The fact remains that our current strategy in Iraq is a failure. We must change our mission. Delaying the redeployment of our brave young men and women in uniform in Iraq until next summer will not lead to greater regional stability in a troubled region of the world.” – Rep. Diane Watson, D-Los Angeles “The message I got from their testimony is that we need to build on the successes we have achieved in order to complete the mission. A self-sustaining, self-defending Iraq is not a guarantee, but it is still a possibility. We cannot walk from the battlefield now.” – Rep. David Dreier, R-Glendora Reaction from some of the Valley-area representatives to the report delivered by Gen. David Petraeus: “We just can’t leave until we’ve accomplished the mission. … We’re still in Japan, we’re still in South Korea … those countries are strong democracies now.” – Rep. Howard “Buck” McKeon, R-Santa Clarita “The reduction is that we will have surged, and then the surge is over. But he’s basically saying that Iraq is not safe enough to let us reduce our troops to below the pre-surge level.” 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
