Wage issue hits India’s easternmost tiger reserve

first_imgConservation of the Royal Bengal Tiger has taken a hit in India’s easternmost tiger reserve. The authorities of the Namdapha Tiger Reserve in Arunachal Pradesh have discontinued the services of 53 frontline staff, all casual employees. The 1,895 sq.km. tiger reserve in Changlang district, bordering Myanmar, is now left with 113 casual employees, who were inducted under Project Tiger of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).In an order on July 14, Namdapha’s Field Director T. Riba said the 53 were shortlisted after an assessment of the performing and non-performing workers. This was in view of non-payment of wages of the casual employees by the NTCA.Officials of the Arunachal Pradesh Forest Department said the NTCA, formed in 2005, roped in 166 people for Namdapha a few years ago. But the NTCA did not provide any fund for wages of these casual employees during the 2018-2019 fiscal.“A huge amount of fund is required to meet the expenses of wages of these employees, and also a huge amount of arrear wages is lying outstanding due to non-receipt of funds from the NTCA,” the order said.“There are a large number of non-performing casual employees adding to the burden of this establishment,” the order said, adding that the non-performing employees were evaluated and told to go.“Almost 80% of Namdapha is inaccessible, and it is difficult for the staff to monitor the remaining area of the tiger reserve. The reduced staff strength will make it harder for us, but one cannot help if there are no funds,” Mr. Riba told The Hindu.Three tigersWildlife officials believe that Namdapha, at an altitude varying from 200 metres to 4,571 metres above mean sea level, is an ideal tiger habitat. But no tiger has ever been caught there in camera traps.“In 2018, we set up 118 camera traps but could not catch any tiger. We confirmed the presence of three individual tigers from pug marks and scats (DNA from tiger poop),” Mr Riba said.Namdapha, named after a river meandering through it, was declared as India’s 15th Tiger Reserve in 1983 with a core area of 1,808 sq km and a buffer zone of 177 sq km. Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1972, it was elevated to a national park in the same year as it was made a tiger reserve. The tiger is one of 96 species of mammals found in Namdapha, which is divided into the Miao, Namdapha and Gandhigram ranges. The others include the endemic red giant flying squirrel, leopard, clouded leopard, snow leopard, Malayan sun bear, Asiatic black bear, hoolock gibbon, and capped langur.Namdapha has been in the news for the State government’s push for developing a 156 km road through it connecting Miao, the headquarters of the tiger reserve, and Vijaynagar, a settlement of former Assam Rifles personnel close to the Myanmar border. The road is the lifeline of Vijaynagar requiring people to trek for seven to 10 days. The odd sortie by Indian Air Force is the only other way for the people there to communicate with the world beyond.last_img read more

Liverpool in talks to sign Shaqiri

first_imgAfter missing out on Lyon’s Nabil Fekir, Liverpool has now set their sights on signing Stoke City winger Xherdan Shaqiri. With a reported release clause of €13.5 – a steal in the current market – the Swiss midfielders stock has skyrocketed and Jurgen Klopp’s side are the favourites to secure his services.Shaqiri was relegated last season with Stoke and is surely too big a name and too great a talent to spend next season languishing in the Championship.Despite an abysmal season on the team front, individually Shaqiri still often stood out and managed to contribute 8 goals and 7 assists for the Potters. At 26 years of age, the Switzerland international is approaching his prime and after failed spells with Bayern Munich and Inter Milan in the past, he could well be ready for another stab at the big time at Anfield.divock origi, liverpoolReport: Origi cause Klopp injury concerns George Patchias – September 14, 2019 Divock Origi injury in today’s game against Newcastle is a cause for concern for Jurgen Klopp.Perhaps with one eye on Tuesday’s trip to Italy…Following his country’s friendly win over Japan at the weekend, the winger remained coy on speculation, responding plainly to questions over his future: “I can’t tell you anything, my agents take care of my future. I’m focusing on the national team right now.”The Stoke Sentinel reported that talks began as early as last Friday between the two clubs, with plenty of time before the World Cup for this deal to be finalised.last_img read more

I didn’t make it, I stayed in Turin. I believe I was coming back from the national team.”“When the squad returned, everybody kept talking about this 17-year old kid whose name was Messi and was impossible to stop.”“It was years later when I arrived in Barcelona, that I was able to assess that he would make it big. We can’t make a big fuzz out of the whole subject.”“If I only talked about all the football players who were undisciplined that I came across in my career, I would talk for a whole month,” he concluded.Thuram on Dembélé: “The important thing is he’s a top player. I’d tell him when you move clubs to learn from the veterans. There’s no need to turn his term into drama. Mallya skips appearance before ED promises legal help to probe charges

first_imgVijay Mallya has responded to the third summons notice sent by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), seeking an extension until the end of May to reply to it, reported NDTV. The ED had set a deadline of April 9.The law enforcement agency is investigating a money laundering charge against the liquor baron who’s accused of siphoning a portion of his loan amount to foreign shores for purposes beyond the loan terms.Officials privy to the matter said Mallya had informed the investigating officer (IO) in Mumbai about his inability to depose in person because of the ongoing proceedings against him in the Supreme Court.  He also said that a settlement on the same is being worked out by his legal and corporate teams, which might take some more time. However, he has suggested that his legal counsels will help the ED in facilitating the probe.Meanwhile, the Supreme Court division bench Thursday asked him to deposit a substantial amount to prove his bona fides along with his settlement plan.  It also directed him to disclose his assets as well as the assets owned by his wife and children by April 21.This is the second extension Mallya had requested in two weeks, and he constantly excusing himself from deposition will be taken up by the ED for a considered approach Monday, said the news channel. A legal action might be in store as summons can be issued a maximum of three times under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), an ED source told NDTV. The consortium of 17 lender-banks led by the State Bank of India (SBI) had approached the court to get Mallya’s passport impounded and bar him from leaving Indian shores. They accused him of defaulting on loans to the tune of Rs. 7,000 crore with regard to Kingfisher Airlines alone. His other concerns owe another Rs. 2,000 crore to the banks.Mallya has also been asked to notify when he will be able to appear in court and the next hearing is scheduled for April 26.last_img read more

In a first Baba Ramdevs Patanjali to tap equitylinked fund to raise

first_img Baba Ramdev’s ‘swadeshi’ clothes to hit stores Close Yoga guru-turned entrepreneur Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved hired two investment banks to raise money worth Rs 1,000 crore.”The discussions assume significance since this is for the first time since its founding in 2007 that Patanjali is exploring an equity-linked fund-raise option,” Mint reported quoting sources. The Mint report stated that one of the two investment banks is a Hyderabad-based boutique firm specializing in the consumer packaged goods segment.Earlier in August, Patanjali expressed its intention to raise fund worth around Rs1,000 crore for its expansion plans. But the Haridwar-based group has rejected offers earlier, including from private equity funds, to sell equity stakes.Recently, in an exclusive interview to news portal Moneycontrol, Patanjali’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Acharya Balkrishna ruled out an initial public offering in the near future.”If we go for an IPO, it is natural for an investor to expect returns on his investment. If we don’t meet his expectations and sentiments, we would end up hurting them. And if we meet them, we may face difficulty in having the peace with which we are doing our work, the fun and the free spirit with which are carrying out our work. That’s what we feel and hence there is no plan for an IPO,” he told the news portal, while explaining the reason to keep the company private.Currently, the company has 50 manufacturing units and it is planning to scale up production at its existing facilities in Maharashtra, Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, a company spokesperson told BloombergQuint in August. Toyota shows off its new iQ electriccar prototype

first_img Toyota unveils hybrid car push The car is slated to fit three passengers, which makes it smaller than both the Mitsubishi i-MiEV and the Nissan Leaf, two currently popular electric vehicles. This is, of course, not Toyota’s only attempt to make an electric vehicle. They are also working with Tesla Motors Inc. to create an electric version of the RAV4 compact SUV which is also planned to be released in 2012. Several other vehicles are in the works for the future, but they have much longer wait times, such as the sedan-type fuel-cell hybrid vehicle expected to launch in 2015 in Japan, the U.S. and Europe. This system will feature a flat lithium-ion battery pack which, according to Toyota, will be able to give the car a driving range of up to 105 kilometers, or about 65 miles, on a single charge. Obviously, the car is built for short-range transportation, and not for use on longer trips, which is a common issue with electric cars. This is a preview only, since sales of the car will not begin until an as-yet-unspecified date in the year 2012. At first, the EV is likely to be available in Europe through a leasing plan, once it finishes its road testing, which will also be done in Europe. The car will also be available in North America, and some other markets which are currently being investigated for their viability. © 2010 PhysOrg.com This document is subject to copyright. Flaunt your baby bump in style this wedding season

first_imgWhile celebrities are flaunting their baby bumps with panache, you can be at your fashionable best during your pregnancy too. Stylists share a few tips to help you keep your wardrobe and style sorted when you’re expecting your little one:Go flowy: Maxi dresses, anarkalis and empire-cut gowns are a pregnancy-must. They are the perfect marriage of comfort and style. Accessorise the look with a bright bag and wear comfortable wedge heels. Go the colour-block way as that has enough of a platform to be comfortable and is trending right now. If you want to avoid heels for the everlasting pregnancy back pain, go for printed or embroidered juttis. We advise not to skimp on the accessories when dressing your bump. Use accessories to create a focal point and bring the attention up to your face with the long danglers and jhumkas or a statement necklace. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfElongate your frame: When you are pregnant, you never want to wear a choker. It makes you look shorter. Longer necklaces draw the eyes down, while dangling earrings bring the focus to a woman’s neck and shoulder. Scarves and dupattas can also help pregnant ladies create a laid-back luxe look. The point of this look is putting all of her accessories in a way to make her look longer and leaner. Don’t go big: Your first instinct may be to buy some long, loose tops that are one or two sizes bigger than your regular size. Buy something big enough to cover your belly. Opt for semi-fitted styles which flare up waist downwards for maximum effect.  Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveNo heels: Avoid stilettos as far as possible as those precious high heels cannot give your back the support it needs during your pregnancy. Opt for comfortable, dressy flats that will take you from day to night. T-strap sandals, classy ballerinas, juttis or colourful kolhapuris can be your soulmate for those nine months. Size up a half size to accommodate your growing feet. After the baby comes, stash them away for next time or thank them very much and pay it forward to the next lucky lady. Fabric: When buying maternity wedding wear that you hope will last through several pregnancy stages, choose high-quality, well-made items. Ideal maternity clothes will be made with strong, semi-stretchy material that will grow with you, so they will stay snug, flattering and supportive as your body changes. Breathability, softness, durability and stretch are the things to look for in high-quality, comfortable maternity clothes. Natural blended fabrics such as cotton-silk, breathable crepe and flowy chiffons will be soft and easy going, helping you with pregnancy hot flashes and itchiness that are common.Wear bright colours: Colour is a very important thing Wear brighter hues and softer pastels to emphasize that ever-so-youthful pregnancy glow.last_img read more
