On Basketball: Kyrie gets a new address, but Cavs win trade

But the sum of the parts says Cleveland got the better of Boston in this swap of All-Star point guards. Minnesota never offered Andrew Wiggins. Miami never offered half its roster. Portland wasn’t giving up Damian Lillard. In the end the Cavs still got a star for a star, and since Thomas is only making about $6.3 million next season they got plenty of bonus parts as well to make the trade work.It also solved one big Cleveland problem.James’ only motivation is rings, and this move gives him just that.He will be looking to go to the Finals for the eighth consecutive year. Only three teams in NBA history have been to four straight finals — the Lakers, the Celtics, and the Miami Heat when James was with them. Golden State will be heavy favorites to join that club next June. The Cavaliers won’t surprise many if they join them.James will show up at camp in a couple of months and begin plotting ways to get his team back to the Finals. Had Irving still been there, James surely would have been wondering if they could make it work again. With Thomas, there won’t be a question. James and Thomas already have great respect for one another, and Thomas runs on the same prove-people-wrong gasoline that James uses.Cleveland has been through the free-agency-is-looming dance with James before, of course. If the Cavs want to keep him next summer, they simply have to go all-in to make him as happy as possible. This trade probably wasn’t a bad start on that front. In Boston, the Celtics will look very different this season.Irving and Hayward are in; Thomas, Crowder, Avery Bradley, Kelly Olynyk and Amir Johnson are out — meaning five of Boston’s seven top scorers from a No. 1 seed now play elsewhere. The Cavs weren’t overhauled; Irving is gone, Thomas, Derrick Rose and Jeff Green arrived. From a continuity standpoint, obvious edge to Cleveland as well. SEA Games: PH’s Alisson Perticheto tops ice skating short program There are many ways to claim victory in the deal made Tuesday night. Kyrie Irving wanted his own team and got it, so he wins. Isaiah Thomas gets to play with LeBron James, so he wins. The Cavaliers got rid of a supposedly disgruntled star, so they won. The Celtics now won’t have to decide if Thomas is worth something like a $180 million deal next summer, so they won. It’s all semantics. But look past all that.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSWATCH: Drones light up sky in final leg of SEA Games torch runSPORTSSEA Games: Philippines picks up 1st win in men’s water poloSPORTSMalditas save PH from shutoutIn the end, Cleveland won. James won, too. Here’s a few reasons why James will be celebrating this deal: He’ll still have a high-octane point guard; he’s getting an absurdly good defender in Jae Crowder (he could have helped the Cavs’ cause against Golden State in The Finals); he won’t be going into the season dealing with drama about Irving’s Cleveland future; this trade might even reap the Cavaliers the No. 1 pick in next year’s draft. Read Next LOOK: Venues for 2019 SEA Games SEA Games in Calabarzon safe, secure – Solcom chief Catriona Gray spends Thanksgiving by preparing meals for people with illnesses All good things, all edge to Cleveland.Give the Celtics credit for being bold. Danny Ainge knew winning the Eastern Conference’s regular-season crown last season was meaningless, so he completely blew up a team that was a No. 1 seed and got hammered by the Cavaliers in the East finals. Sure, the Celtics played most of that series without Thomas, but that wasn’t going to matter. The Cavs weren’t losing that series. So Ainge goes out and gets an All-Star point guard in Irving, after he hauls in Gordon Hayward during free agency and adds probable rookie of the year front-runner Jayson Tatum to the mix in the draft — plus gets another draft pick in either 2018 or 2019 for his trouble. It’s not a bad deal for the Celtics. They get Irving. It’s his team. A storied franchise is in his hands and he will savor that. It’s just a better deal for Cleveland, at least right now.ADVERTISEMENTlast_img read more

O.J. Simpson granted parole after nearly 9 years in prison

first_imgSimpson, gray-haired but looking trimmer than he has in recent years, walked briskly into the hearing room dressed in jeans, a light-blue prison-issue shirt and sneakers. He laughed at one point as the parole board chairwoman mistakenly gave his age as 90.The Hall of Fame athlete’s chances of winning release were considered good, given similar cases and Simpson’s model behavior behind bars. His defenders have argued, too, that his sentence was out of proportion to the crime and that he was being punished for the two murders he was acquitted of during his 1995 “Trial of the Century” in Los Angeles, the stabbings of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. Before the hearing concluded, one of the dealers Simpson robbed, Bruce Fromong, said the former football great never pointed a gun at him during the confrontation, adding that it was one of the men with him who did so. Fromong said Simpson deserved to be released.“He is a good man. He made a mistake,” Fromong said, adding the two remain friends.Simpson’s eldest child, 48-year-old Arnelle Simpson, also testified on his behalf, saying her father is not perfect but realizes what a mistake he made and has spent years paying for it.ADVERTISEMENT He got the four votes he needed from the parole commissioners who heard his case. In agreeing to release him, they cited his lack of a prior conviction, the low risk he might commit another crime, his community support and his release plans.During the more than hour-long hearing, Simpson forcefully insisted — as he has all along — that he was only trying to retrieve items that belonged to him and never meant to hurt anyone. IPL players’ auction on Jan 8-9, decision on Kochi after Nov 27

first_imgInsisting that the season four of Indian Premier League would have eight teams like its previous editions, the IPL governing council on Wednesday decided that the auction of players would be held on January 8 and 9. That means the eighth team issue has to be resolved by the first week of January 2011. The governing council however refrained from any decision on the Kochi team as the deadline to resolve its ownership dispute ends on November 27. After the meeting, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) vice-president and IPL governing council member Rajiv Shukla said, “Now that preparations for IPL-4 have started in full swing, we have to make it a big success. Eighth and ninth January has been set for the players’ auction in Mumbai.” “The BCCI president has already said that there will be eight teams in the league and the format will remain unchanged,” he added. The controversial Kochi IPL franchise’s fate has been uncertain even as it got an extension to sort out its problem pertaining to ownership. Though the latest deadline set by the governing council lapses in 10 days, reports had suggested that the franchisees might throw in the towel as they have failed to resolve the issue. On the question of Kochi team’s ouster Shukla said, “Kochi team was not discussed today. It has been given one-month notice which lapses on November 27. So any decision on Kochi will be taken after 27th only. Kochi was not on the agenda today.” Since no letter of withdrawal was received from the franchisees, the decision on Koci team’s ouster was not taken on Wednesday. However the governing council has been busy preparing for the exit of Kochi team as it also deliberated on the tender process options in lieu of Kochi’s axe from the season four. Earlier, amidst indications that the group of investors in the Kochi franchise have been unable to resolve their differences over its ownership the IPL governing council members huddled at Mumbai Cricket Association’s Recreation Centre at Bandra Kurla Complex. Options before BCCIEven before a decision on the Kochi team, the BCCI has already started weighing its options and might call for a fresh bid for the eighth franchise if its decision goes against the Kochi team. If that happens, the BCCI would in all likelihood put out an invitation to tender on November 28 and ask for the bids in 15 days. With Kochi’s fate hanging in the balance, the IPL for the moment only has seven confirmed teams in the fray for the forthcoming season. BCCI president Shashank Manohar had earlier told Headlines Today that the governing council would examine all operational and organisational matters pertaining to the IPL season four. If the governing council decision goes against Kochi, the time would be of the essence as player auctions can only be completed once the teams are decided. In case of a new team, the base price could be $225 million.advertisementlast_img read more

The 49-year-old’s collection today is a Mecca of Punjabi antiquity.Sekhon’s home in Chandigarh is a living museum of all things that the royal Patiala of yore has been famous for- from Punjabi juttis and khosas procured from Muktsar, Fazilka, Malout, Rampura and Patiala to intricately woven covers of pettis and sandooks and antique jewellery to 20 pieces of baagh phulkari. But her most valued collection includes 75-year-old Patiala salwar-suits, achkans and rainbow hue ghagras with 75 creases on each of them. The piece de resistance, however, is the ‘gold suit’ that belongs to her husband’s grandmother. She is presently authoring a coffee table book on her collection.Karishma Aggarwal has a collection of 100 Barbie dollsKarishma AggarwalThe Barbie girlWith almost mathematical precision, 13-year-old Karishma Aggarwal enlists the contents of her closet-that stacks around 100 Barbie dolls. “There are Barbies wearing long, flowing gowns, sporting short dresses, some decked up in lehenga cholis or salwar kameez, a Snow-White and even a Britney Spears. Though a few were gifted , I’ve picked most from in and around Chandigarh,” says Karishma. Karishma also possesses a staggering volume of fashion accessories. From laced-up boots, slip-ons and wedges, purses, hats to glittering little tiaras and necklaces, she has it all. She washes, irons and puts on the new dresses on the dolls every evening.”One day, my elder sister Kudrat was reading aloud an article on an American Barbie-collector with 4000 Barbies. I felt an urge to have such a whopping collection too,” elaborates the class seven student of Bhavan Vidyalaya.Gurshinder AulukhGurshinder AulukhNothing is scrapPreserving bits and pieces of Punjabi heritage is an all-consuming passion of 62-year-old Gurshinder Aulakh. Thanks to the collector’s painstaking efforts, her private collection titled Sarmaya- occupies a spacious corner of her resort Aura Vaseela. Besides interesting bric-a-brac that Gurshi’s collected from her various travels across Punjab, the collection also features family heirlooms handed over to her by her mother and mother-in-law. “I was always fascinated by traditional utensils being used in my village,” informs Aulukh, whose love for Punjabi heritage intensified after marriage. “My husband, an I.P.S. Officer, was posted in the Gujarat cadre when we got married. Travelling with him across the state exposed me to its rich heritage,” says Aulukh. She observed that in Punjab people were were trading the golden past for modern stainless steel. The scrap dealers were selling the rich traditional items by their weight at the rates of metal, without realising their worth. The heritage lover’s sensibilities goaded her to make efforts to preserve her culture for the future generations. She started looking around homes, scrap shops and villages. Today, her collection boasts of a rare antiques collected from Bhatinda, Muktsar, Kangra, Jagadhari, Morinda, Kalka, Roopnagar, Sangrur, Pinjore and Kharar. “My favourites include camel kaathees, charkha, a hand pump and a 100-year-old angeethi” says Gurshi, who is encouraging new artistes in varied fields.Gitanjali GillGitanjali GillSilver streakAll that glitters at Gitanjali Gill’s farmhouse in Zirakpur is not gold, but refreshingly silver. Beams the social worker and bauble-lover, who possesses more than 200 antique silver trinkets. “It all started around 11 years back when I was on a vacation in Dalhousie. I came across a local woman wearing unique kanthasand jhumars in silver. This triggered off an interest in silver jewellery,” informs Gill, adding, “These women do not sell their jewellery directly as selling off their ancestral jewellery for financial reasons was a taboo; lest they bring a bad name to the family. Most of these women were selling their jewellery to local goldsmiths and jewellers, who further melted it to make more modern designs.” And so, Gitanjali set off on a collector’s trail, hunting for jewellers who’d sell antique pieces to her. After two years, the lady could boast of more than 180 exquisite pieces: 50-year-old anklets, jhumars, swirling neckpieces, kanthas and rani haars. “There’s even an antique hairclip and an ear cleaner in pure silver, sourced from Banikhet in Chamba,” avers the proud collector.Imranjyot SinghImranjyot SinghMan of coinsHis love and ongoing efforts for collecting coins from around the world is all-consuming. But, perhaps, documenting history runs in the blood of 16-year-old Imranjyot Singh. Son of Opinder Kaur who’s been relentlessly collecting bits and pieces of Punjab’s glorious past, the medical student from the Lawrence School Sanawar, has 250 antique coins dating back to 1776. Imranjyot has a wide range of rare coins from almost parts of the globe-U.S.A, Canada, UK and Mauritius. His collection also include a wide range-Files of Jorden, Dines, Cents and quarter Dollars from USA-dating back to 1776, Devtsche Mark, Republique Francise, Canadian and Sri Lankan cents, Malasian Sens and Bahrains, Australian Florin and South African Rands. Imran’s most valued collection includes Indian one Rupee coins dating back to 1907. Recalls Imranjyot, “It all started at a very young age, when I was sitting with my maternal grandfather and watching a programme on coin collection on Discovery Channel,” smiles the young collector.advertisementadvertisementlast_img read more

IPL 2011: Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Chennai Super Kings- CSK win by 6 wickets

first_imgSuresh Raina scored a quick-fire 73 not out as Chennai beat Bangalore by six wickets to reach the final of the IPL-4. Score | PhotosBangalore will now play in the ‘Qualifier 2’ against the winner of the ‘Eliminator’ match between Kolkata and Mumbai. If Bangalore win the second qualifier, they too will proceed to the final to be played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium In Chennai on Saturday.Chasing 176, Chennai reached the target with two balls to spare against Bangalore during the ‘Qualifier 1’ at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. In a repeat of the last league game between the two teams, Tuesday saw the openers falling to the same bowlers.Paceman Zaheer Khan got rid of Michael Hussey on the sixth ball of the innings even before he had opened his account. In the next over another left-arm pacer S Aravind got the better of Murali Vijay to reduce Chennai to 7/2 in 1.3 overs. Then S Badrinath and Suresh Raina put on 63 runs for the third wicket trying to bring the Chennai innings back on track after the early setback. But in the 11th over Badrinath fell to Abhimanyu Mithun when batting on 34. He wanted to play the ball inside-out, but failed miserably and gave a catch to S Aravind in the covers.Post Badrinath’s wicket, Raina and captain MS Dhoni got going against the opposition bowlers. They started dealing in boundaries trying to raise the slow run rate. And the two picked Mithun for their onslaught. While Raina hit two sixes off him in the 13th over Dhoni hit a four and the over fetched as many as 23 runs.advertisementThe Dhoni-Raina quick-fire 61 run stand finally came to an end in the 17th over off Zaheer Khan. The Chennai captain hit a six off him and then went for another one but this time Mithun caught him at long on and Dhoni was seen walking back on 29. And Chennai were down to 131/4. Raina and Albie Morkel then treated the slog overs the way they are supposed to be treated – as clubbing exercise. The two hit three sixes in the 19th over that saw 21 runs being scored in it.Chennai now needed 12 runs in the last over. Raina took a single on the first ball and then Morkel hit a four and followed it up with a double. A six off the fourth ball by Morkel pushed the Chennai total to 177 – run above the required target.Raina’s 73 came off 50 ball and included a four and six sixes in it.  Morkel scored 28 off 10 balls hitting a four and three sixes on the way.Bangalore inningsVirat Kolhi scored a dogged 70 as Bangalore put on a competitive 175/4 against Chennai.Earlier, Chennai captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and elected to field.Unlike their league games including the last one against Chennai, Chris Gayle didn’t provide Bangalore with a flying start on Tuesday. He departed in the fourth over off the innings off offie R Ashwin, leg before, when the team total was 30/1.Then one-down batsman Virat Kohli and Mayank Agarwal tried to revive the innings post the early setback. The two had put on 35 runs for the second wicket when Agarwal fell. He holed out to Doug Bollinger off Dwayne Bravo on the last ball of the ninth over when batting on 34.Two overs later Chennai’s left-arm spinner Shadab Jakati got rid of AB de Villiers cheaply to reduce Bangalore to 85/3.Finally, Kohli and Luke Pomersbach got on with a partnership helping Bangalore to a decent score. The two put on 48 runs for the fourth wicket before Bollinger scalped Pomersbach in the 17th over when he was batting on 29.But more than that, the last ball of the 18th over brought in a major blow for Chenani, literally. As Ashwin got hit by Saurabh Tiwary just above the left eye and was helped off the field. Clearly he needed a stretcher, but he was made to walk back.  Virat Kohli and Saurabh Tiwary were at the crease when Bangalore’s came to a close. Kohli’s 70 came 44 balls and included five fours and three sixes.last_img read more

Best chief ministers poll: Karnataka CM S.M. Krishna tops charts consistently

Still has to execute all that he has promised. Could face difficulties because Karnataka’s finances are in a mess.Call it Krishna and the art of political consciousness. For he has a Zen like approach to his job – a calm and a detachment that are reassuring. He doesn’t sound embarrassed about admitting that he enjoys the good things of life.Popularity IndicatorThe Congress party’s overall popularity may have shrunk in the past six months but three of its chief ministers head the popularity charts in the states. A.K. Antony and Digvijay Singh are the laggards. For the BJP, its relatively new chief ministers, like Narendra Modi and Rajnath Singh, have done well, as has its Punjab ally Parkash Singh Badal. But there is a problem with other allies, notably O.P Chautala. The Haryana chief minister competes with Tamil Nadu’s O. Paneerselvam and Bihar’s Rabri Devi for the status of unpopular chief ministers. It may not be politically correct to do so especially when you head a state whose 53 million people have a per capita income less than the national average. His sartorial sense is regal and his official bio-data even lists designing men’s clothes as his hobby. He jots down notes with his blue Mont Blanc and has discarded the dowdy Ambassador car for a pearly white Hyundai Sonata.advertisementIn Karnataka he is known as the “Western Gowda” in contrast to a predecessor who went on to become prime minister and made a fetish of his earthy roots. In two years and four months as chief minister, Somanahalli Malaiah Krishna continues to lead with elegance, clarity and efficiency that have for the second successive year seen him being rated as India’s best chief minister by the INDIA TODAY-ORG-MARG poll. What is his secret? According to Krishna, it is his ability to blend orthodoxy and conservatism with modernism. It means being a quintessential Congressman in white kurtas while dealing with party politics and sporting Saville Row suits and a Dallas accent-he studied law in Texas-to woo foreign investors.Click here to EnlargeWhat Krishna certainly has done is bring Karnataka back in focus as the state of the future-an image that had slipped in the 1990s as a succession of chief ministers (one an unabashed tippler)-whittled away its prosperity.Industry big daddies such as Infosys Chairman N.R. Narayana Murthy praise him for his “accessibility and openness to implement new ideas”. Software whiz Ashok Soota, CII’s president-designate, terms him the “feelgood” chief minister. Not one for getting embroiled in the nitty-gritty, Krishna sets targets and expect his colleagues to deliver. He also has set his priorities right, pushing for roads, jobs and houses for townsmen, irrigation schemes for farmers and drinking water for the poor. But Karnataka’s finances continue to be a mess, something he will have to answer for. He will turn 70 soon-the Old Turk he says derisively-but with tennis and yoga as pastimes Krishna appears fit to complete the remaining half of his term with panache.last_img read more

BCCI to decide on shifting England tour game from BKC ground on Wednesday

first_imgThe Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to take a decision on Wednesday on the request made by Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) to shift England’s second tour game from the BKC Ground to DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.”I’m meeting the BCCI chief (N Srinivasan) tomorrow (to discuss the matter). I’m confident the Board would agree to the change in venue,” said MCA president Ravi Savant today.Savant continued to maintain his stand that the ground at the Bandra-Kurla COmplex (BKC) lacked facilities for holding such an important game, scheduled from November 3-5. “The BKC ground does not have facilities like toilets for the spectators. There are no catering facilities around the ground. And the fence is not tall or strong enough to prevent the crowd from jumping on to the ground,” he said. The Mumbai police, too, are sceptical about the security in and around the place, Sawant said adding that provisional bookings have been done at hotels in Navi Mumbai to accommodate the players.England are scheduled to reach Mumbai on October 29 and will prepare for the four-Test series — considered a grudge rubber by India after their 0-4 rout in the last away series last year — by playing three warm-up tour games — two in Mumbai and the third in Ahmedabad, venue of the opening match of the rubber.England’s tour opener is scheduled from October 30 to November 1 at the Cricket Club of India’s Brabourne Stadium and the third game is to be held on a ground, just outside the Sardar Patel Stadium at Motera from November 8-11.advertisementThe opening Test is scheduled at the Motera main stadium from November 15-19 with the subsequent Tests scheduled in Mumbai, Kolkata (Dec 5-9) and Nagpur (Dec 13-17).England would play two T20 Internationals against India on December 20 (Pune) and December 22 (Mumbai) prior to departing home for the Christmas and New Year break, before returning to play in a five-match ODI series in January 2013.last_img read more

Exercise and immunity

first_imgInformationBattling another cough or cold? Feeling tired all the time? Taking a daily walk or following a simple exercise routine a few times a week may help you feel better.Exercise not only helps your immune system fight off simple bacterial and viral infections, it decreases your chances of developing heart disease, osteoporosis, and cancer. We dont know exactly how exercise increases your immunity to certain illnesses, but there are several theories.Physical activity may help by flushing bacteria out from the lungs (thus decreasing the chance of a cold, flu, or other airborne illness) and may flush out cancer-causing cells (carcinogens) by increasing output of wastes, such as urine and sweat.Exercise sends antibodies and white blood cells (the bodys defense cells) through the body at a quicker rate. As these antibodies or white blood cells circulate more rapidly, they could detect illnesses earlier than they might normally. The increased rate of circulating blood may also trigger the release of hormones that “warn” immune cells of intruding bacteria or viruses. The temporary rise in body temperature may prevent bacterial growth, allowing the body to fight the infection more effectively. (This is similar to what happens when the body has a fever.)Exercise slows down the release of stress-related hormones. Stress increases the chance of illness. While exercise is beneficial, be careful not to “overdo” it. People who already exercise regularly are cautioned not to develop too vigorous a workout program in the hopes of increasing the immunity benefits. Heavy, long-term exercise (such as marathon running and intense gym training) could actually decrease the amount of white blood cells circulating through the body and increase the presence of stress-related hormones.advertisementStudies have shown that the people who benefit most from starting (and sticking to) an exercise program are those who go from a sedentary (“couch potato”) lifestyle to a moderately energetic lifestyle. A moderate program can consist of:Bicycling with the children a few times a weekDaily 20 – 30 minute walksGoing to the gym every other dayPlaying golf regularlyExercise can help us feel better about ourselves, just by making us feel more energetic and healthier. So go ahead, take that aerobics class or go for that walk — and feel better and healthier for it.There is not strong evidence that taking any immune supplements along with exercising lowers the chance of illness or infections.ReferencesIvker RS.
